Game Recap

For the second game of the day in Section 7AAAA play the Fighting Saints had to take on the Bluejackets from Cambridge-Isanti in the loser’s bracket. The game would mark the third time this season the Fighting Saints and Bluejackets have faced each other and both games before the Fighting Saints came out victorious!
Today’s game started off with Cambridge really hitting the ball hard with a lead-off double and then single to score the first run of the game. The Saints starting pitcher, Alex Marron, was able to get the next three batters out in the first inning to keep Cambridge to only the one run at the beginning of the game.
The Saints came back themselves in the first inning with two outs Kiley Murschel drew a walk and then senior catcher, Emma Lero crushed a home run over the left center wall to push the game to a 2-1 lead favoring the Saints.
The game was held scoreless in the second inning for both teams. But the third inning the Bluejackets again really hit the ball hard and after two back to back home runs in the inning the game was 5-2 favoring Cambridge. The Saints switch up pitchers on the mound and Ella Roberts was able to come in and get the final outs to get the Saints out of the inning.
The Saints would not give up easily in the third inning themselves being down by three runs and came back with their own bats with a lead off walk from Heckenlaible, followed by a triple from Boelter, and then a home run from Kiley Murschel to tie the game back up 5-5. The Saints would push two more runs through on a single from Kylie Bergman with 2 outs in the third and that was followed by a home run from Hailey Heckenlaible pushing the game to a 10-5 score in the third inning. The Saints were still not done with 2 outs in the third. Boelter was hit by a pitch after Heckenlaible’s homerun, Murschel was then walked, Lero was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Emily Sarell, who drew a walk and pushed another run through for the Saints. Then with the same 2 outs in the third inning Ally Mathwig hit a high fly ball to shallow center field that went in and out of the center fielder’s glove and scored another two runs for the Saints. By the time the third inning was done, the Saints had regained the lead over the Bluejackets with a commanding 13-5 lead.
Ella Roberts threw the rest of the game for the Fighting Saints on the mound, giving up one run in the top of the 4th inning off of a single and then triple. But Roberts shut down the Bluejackets the rest of the contest in the 4th and 5th innings.
The Saints were ready in the bottom of the fifth inning to hit again and were lead-off with a single up the middle from Murschel, followed by a reach on an error hit from Lero, who had Sydney Green running for her at first base, however the game ended with a walk-off 3 run home run from Emily Sarell the very first pitch in her at bat in the fifth inning, due to the 10 run rule in softball.
In this section play off game the Saints had four different players hit home runs: Emma Lero, Kiley Murschel, Hailey Heckenlaible, and Emily Sarell.
The Fighting Saints with the win now move on to the Final Four on Wednesday, May 31st at Central Park in Ramsey where they will face the #2 Seed: Blaine at 3:30pm. With a win the Saints will play at 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 31st.
