The Fighting Saints 2015 football team opened their season against the team that ended the 2014 season for the Saints in the Section 7AAAAA finals, the Bemidji Lumberjacks. It’s a new year and both have different teams but both are expected to have successful seasons with many returning players.
The Saints took the opening kickoff, converted two 4th down plays to extend drives, and capped off their drive with a 5 yard touchdown pass from Senior Hunter Trautman to Senior wideout Robbie Whitney. The Lumberjacks returned the ensuing kickoff 95-yards to knot the score. The Saints then took the lead for good when Senior running back Max Greene rumbled 6 yards. The Saints threatened to end the first half but couldn’t finish a drive and went into halftime with a 14-7 lead. 8th grade kicker Hunter Dustman drilled a 35 yard field goal with 6:15 left in the 3rd quarter and Max Greene tallied his 2nd touchdown of the game with an 8-yard scamper which gave the Saints a huge 24-7 lead.
The Saints defense was outstanding the entire game holding Bemidji in check. Lumberjack star running back Logan Hatfield was held to 13 yards on 6 carries in the first half. The Saints special teams struggled at times and the defense was put in a difficult spot late in the game after an errant snap on a punt. The only offensive touchdown given up by the defense came late in the game on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Nice start to the season and a little revenge for last season. More importantly, the victory gives the Saints a strong start to their 2015 season. The Saints play next Friday, August 28th at North Branch.
