Hermantown High School
Saint Francis High School
The Fighting Saints took on the Hermantown Hawks in a non-conference game at St. Francis High School tonight. The Hawks played in Cambridge for a 4pm game and then traveled to St. Francis to end the double-header for the night.
The game started with a blup single into short center field by the Hawks and then a wild pitch advanced the lead-off runner to second, but the Saints were able to get three big outs on the next three batters to get out of the first inning without giving up a run.
The Saints were unable to get a runner on in the bottom of the first but put the ball in play with each player up to bat.
The Hawks again put a runner on in the second inning and she advanced on an overthrow to third base without anyone out. However, senior pitcher Alex Marron and the Saints defense shut down the next three batters again with a pop out, strike out, and fly out to center to hold the game at a 0-0 score.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Saints had two outs when Ella Roberts was walked, then the next batter Ally Mathwig was walked, and then Alex Marron came up and hit a single to advance Roberts to third and Mathwig to second. With bases loaded, junior Kylie Bergman hit a hard line drive into left field for a single and scored the first run of the game. The very next batter was Hailey Heckenlaible, who drew another walk and the Saints pushed another run through on the walk with bases loaded. The second inning ended on a ground out in the infield with bases loaded, but the Saints had a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third the first batter drew a walk from Marron on the mound and then the next two hitters put the ball in play for a double and single to score the Hawks first run of the game. With runners on second and third, the ball was hit into play at first base, the Saints got the out at one but the run scored at home to tie the game up. The Hawks were able to push one more run through in the bottom of the third inning with a blup pop fly between right and second base, when Brenna McMahon made a great catch for the second out of the inning running backwards but could not get the throw into catcher Emma Lero for the quick runner on third that tagged up to score the go-ahead run. Marron struck out the very next batter to close out the third inning, but the Hawks took the lead 3-2.
The Saints and Hawks had multiple times throughout the rest of the game to push more runs through but there was great defense and pitching from both teams tonight and the rest of the game stayed scoreless.
The Saints were led on the mound tonight by Alex Marron, who has been pitching really well for the Fighting Saints all season. Marron threw the complete game, giving up seven hits, only one walk, and struck out three batters, however her pitch count was amazing tonight throwing 65 of her 98 pitches for strikes and making two great plays on balls that came back and hit her right on the mound.
The Fighting Saints have one more regular season game left next week on Tuesday vs. conference opponent-Chisago Lakes for senior night at 4:30pm before starting playoffs. Come cheer on your Saints!
