The Fighting Saints finished Day 1 of the 7AA Section meet on Wednesday, May 31. Seniors Tommy Schwieger and Amanda Anderson both qualified for the Minnesota AA State meet, which will take place at Hamline University on June 9 and 10. Schwieger broke the SFHS record in triple jump. The previous record of 45′ 1.75″ was set in 1992 by D. Carlson; Schwieger placed second in the section meet with a record jump of 45′ 5.0″. Anderson took first place in discus with a throw of 158′ 6.0″, a staggering 34 feet farther than second place; Anderson placed first in discus in the 2016 State meet.
Day 1 also included prelims for many athletes who were aiming to qualify for finals on Saturday; senior Genuine Matthews qualified in the 100m dash and 400m dash, and senior Taylor Karasch qualified in the 100m dash and 200m dash. Freshman and newcomer Maria Lundenbach earned a spot on the podium, placing 7th in the 3200m run.
