Multiple Teams · Varsity falls short in Sections match at Grand Rapids

Varsity Volleyball lost in three sets to a powerful Grand Rapids team in the third round of Sections last night. This was always going to be a difficult game and our girls represented themselves and St. Francis very well. While this is disappointing for the team, they should not dwell on it long, the players left it all on the court and should be very proud of their efforts and accomplishments. Now they can look forward to the year end banquet to take stock of an incredible season, the great memories and lifetime friendships they have formed.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Volleyball beats Anoka in big Sections Match.

Having lost earlier in the season to Anoka in a five set shootout, everyone expected this game to be a thriller and the teams did not disappoint. After taking the first set, the Saints traded the next three leading to the decisive fifth. A near point for point battle ensued that was the most exciting volleyball we have seen so far this year. The desire to beat Anoka was strong and the mood in the gym was electric. Also, a huge turn out by Saints fans to cheer and scream for the team was nothing short of amazing, and when the final point was scored by the Saints everyone was screaming, it was deafening. Congratulations to senior setter Hannah McCann on achieving her 2,000th career set assist! The team now heads all the way to Grand Rapids to play the semi-final round of sections on Wednesday. While it is a long way to go, anyone who can make the trip will play a very important roll in showing our team that we BELIEVE!

Multiple Teams · Coach Waterworth named Saints Boy’s Basketball Coach

Coach Kyle Waterworth grew up in northwestern Minnesota in the city of Thief River Falls where he graduated from in 1998. While attending Lincoln High School he participated in basketball, baseball, football, and cross country. During his high school basketball career he was a 3-year varsity letter winner for the Prowlers.

Upon graduating high school, Coach Waterworth attended the University of Minnesota Moorhead in Moorhead, MN where he earned a bachelor of science degree in social studies secondary education in 2002. During college Coach Waterworth was a basketball referee in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

The 2017-18 season will mark Coach Waterworth’s 1st as the head coach of the boys basketball program at St. Francis High School, but he’s far from an unfamiliar face there. The upcoming season will be his 15th season with the Saints program. Prior to accepting the head coaching position for the Saints, he served as a St. Francis assistant under Ron Larson and more recently head coach Ryan Hauge. During his tenure as an assistant coach the Saints have played in 4 section semifinals games, 3 section championship games in 2013, 2014 & 2015, and went to the AAAA Minnesota State Boys Basketball tournament in back to back seasons in 2014 and 2015.

In addition to coaching basketball for the Saints, Coach Waterworth has served in various coaching roles in both the football and softball programs and is entering his 7th season of coaching freshman baseball.

Coach Waterworth’s goal for the basketball program is to use basketball as a way to teach student-athletes many important life skills. Skills such as teamwork, hard work, perseverance, and leadership are all core values he plans to work to instill in the Saints basketball program.

Coach Waterworth is in his 15th year of teaching 7th grade history at the middle school and is in his 6th year of serving as the ISD #15 Social Studies Curriculum Specialist. Kyle and his wife Laura reside in St. Francis and have 2 daughters Ella (8) and Chloe (7) who both attend East Bethel Elementary.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Volleyball takes a showdown match with Rogers

This was a match that both Rogers and the Saints were looking forward to playing. Rogers wanted redemption from a nail biting loss in fives sets last year. For our Saints, it was to prove that we can play and win against the best of teams. Varsity came out firing and took the first two sets with relative ease, but Rogers is a good team and refused to go down without a fight, they rallied back to take the next two sets from us leading to a fifth and deciding set. The Saints pulled out to an early lead and never looked back hammering shot after shot to a 15-8 win to take the match. The evening had a shadow cast over it as one of our players is dealing with a family tragedy, and while no one would have blamed her if she had chose not to play, but with the support of her team she had an amazing game and personal performance. It is important to point out that the older girls on varsity are often looked up to by the younger players hoping to one day make varsity themselves and watching her play through such adversity, she demonstrated a high level of class and determination to be there for her teammates. May she and her family heal their hearts and find peace with the support of those around them. This win locked third place in our conference and gives the team a first round bye going into sections. The Saints will face Anoka in an away game on October 27th at 7pm, come out and cheer loudly for a team that deserves to be supported by everyone.
